Save the Trees!

Do you know how lovely rain forests are?  

All people care about is what trees make out of them. Well, we do need all that stuff, but we don’t need to cut down all the beautiful rain forests, not even the normal forests.

You can use trees for lots of things: timber, firewood, fun, making things, scenery.

WHAT TREES MAKE FOR ANIMALS

They make: 

Protection, food, water, shelter. It is like a woven carpet. If one animal dies then they all die like pulling on a lose thread it all unravels.

HOW DO TREES CLEAN THE AIR?

Trees clean by:

They breathe in CO2 (cabon dioxide) and breathe out O2 (oxygen). This makes it easier to breathe.

 The trees deserve to live, they don’t have to just be cut down for their materials. They’re just like people.  You wouldn’t just kill some for their money! So let them live.

Trees Are Important

The use of trees is more than you think, they can be made into all sorts of stuff like paper, card, cardboard, homes and wood. The life of animals is like a colony of bees. If the queen dies the whole colony fails. FORESTS are homes, water, shelter and good hiding spots. We are losing 170 species of animals a day. Trees are really important for everything. Trees make clean-air for us, animals, plants, other sea animals and also stuff like natural resources. Trees save the world by breathing in carbon dioxide and breathing out oxygen. If you care about trees then don’t cut as many down!

THE PROBLEM WITH PLASTIC BAGS ...

One of our reading groups 'Sand' read an interesting article called 'Plastic Fantastic'. They learnt many interesting and alarming facts about Plastic Bags.  They were surprised to see that many other countries are doing a lot more than New Zealand to reduce the use of plastic bags!

Explanations About Our Posters

Today we worked on finishing our posters.  We had a teaching session on writing an explanation about our poster.  We used the success criteria we created together in class after looking at a variety of posters about The 3 R's & Zero Waste to guide our explanations.  We are trying to use the terminology to explain the techniques we used.

Shelley created a happy bright poster to encourage people to not litter.

Lucia chose to shape her poster as a hexagon to remind people to STOP littering.

Xander and Ryan worked together to create this poster.  They are trying to get their audience to RECYCLE.  

It is important to do a draft for visual language just like we do in writing.  It is also important to proof-read and edit our draft poster!

Success Criteria Posters (Static Images)

Level 2

·         Plan my poster

·         Think carefully about where to place things

·         Link words and pictures.  Make them work together

·         Use colour (mood) e.g. green for Zero Waste, red for love, yellow for happiness, green for jealousy

·         Make it eye catching

·         Use a border that relates to the poster or makes it stand out

·         Proof-read and edit before publishing

·         Bold or/and colourful title

·         Graphics/Pictures that relate to the theme in the poster

·         Clear message ( slogan, motto, statement) e.g. ‘Litter Louts’, ‘Litter Bug’, Stamp Out Litter’, ‘Keep NZ                     Tidy’, ‘ Don’t Be a Litter Bug!’

·         Identify where posters will be displayed

All of the above plus…

·         Uses a dominant image (positioned for effect

·         Uses colour symbolically to show the mood

·         Uses simile, slogan, motto, statement, quotation, question

·         Place things side by side for effect  for effect so that the similarities and differences can        be seen (juxtaposition)

Five Easy Steps to Save the World

1.   Stop putting foil and plastic in your lunchbox.
2.   Buy one sandwich wrapper made out of fabric.
3.   Start to encourage friends to do the same.
4.   When you go to New World with a sibling or a parent, they might try to buy something with a wrapper.  Say NO!
5.  Don't be lazy, put rubbish in the rubbish bin.  Don't leave it around.

Rubbish in Playground After our Clean Up!

Today we photographed areas where there was a lot of rubbish.  Here is what we found today.  We were very disappointed.  One of the worst areas is in the area below the path where high school students and the public walk (on the lower side of the path).  Another area we found lots of rubbish was in the tussocks.  What can we do to solve the problem?

30% in weight and in amount.

How much was packaging?

How much was plastic?

Could any of this be recycled?
Yes.  We could recycle the paper, plastic, cardboard and wood.

Could any of this go into a compost bin?
Yes.  The paper and the food scraps.

Would healthier food reduce rubbish at our school?
Yes.  We thought that fruit, did not have any packaging so its good to bring for morning tea and lunch.  Sandwiches and wraps etc were also good because you can put them in a reusable container or one of the eco sandwich wraps. 

Would the 3 R's help reduce rubbish at our school?
The wood could be reused, the plastic, cardboard and paper recycled and we can definitely reduce the rubbish we bring and discard.  The other bits and pices we found could be reused for art activities.

Does our school have enough litter bins?  Are they in the right places? Do our children use these enough?
We discussed this at length.  We decided we had enough bins and it was our job to make sure we took our rubbish home, began using our bokasi buckets again, started a worm farm and had a school compost bin that we would have no need for bins at all.  

Do we need a compost bin or a worm farm?
Yes.  We decided to write to Jo Roberts and ask if this can be started.  She is in charge of our Eco School programme. 

Do parents waiting outside our school cause any rubbish?
We did not think they were causing any litter.  There was 1or 2 New World bags and some cigarette butts, but because we are a 'Smoke Free' school these were not from our parents.  Maybe the bags had blown into the school and the cigarette butts from people coming through our school at night or the weekend. 

Is there any one company involved in our litter?

No one company.  The wrappers were the biggest concern.  We found Fresh up cartons, Cadbury mini bars, Pam's wrappers but there were many other varieties as well.  We thought we could write to some of these big companies to try and persuade them to use more environmentally friendly packaging and wrappers.
