Picasso, The Artist

We learnt about Picasso before we began our artwork.  Here is some information.  We talked lots about realism and abstract portraits. 

• Pablo Picasso was born more than 120 years ago (1881) in Malaga, Spain.
• He is famous for being the co-founder of cubism which is a style of   painting where objects of the painting subject are broken up and re-painted in an abstract form.
• When Pablo was age 7 his father (who was also a painter) gave him artistic training in figure-drawing and oil painting.
• Later on Pablo studied art in Madrid and then went to Paris when he was about 19. In 1900 Paris was considered the art capital of Europe.

Picasso's work is divided into periods:

   - The Blue Period (1901-1904), which were sad looking paintings using blue and blue-green colours.

-   The Rose Period (1905-1907), which was a more happy style with orange and pink colours.

-   The African-influenced Period (1908-1909)

-   The Cubism Period (1909- 1919)

• He died (heart attack) in 1973 aged 91.

The 4 R's of Learning

Guy Claxton talks about learning power.  We are developing the children's 'Learner Toolboxes', so we will be discussing the following learning power 'muscles' (dispositions) we need to develop to make us powerful learners.   
What makes a good learner?
What qualities, knowledge , skills and dispositions do we need to be successful learners?
We are hoping that all children in Tipuranga will develop and strengthen their 'learning muscles' in our 'Mind Gym'.  We will be making sure their 'learning toolboxes' grow and develop over 2015.  Guy Claxton says...

' Being stuck is the beginning of learning, not the end!'

Resilience ( Feeling)
Being ready, willing and able to lock into learning

• being absorbed and getting pleasure from learning
• recognising and reducing interruptions
• noticing all the opportunities around you
• 'stickability' when the going gets tough (it is OK to make mistakes and remember to learn from them)

Resourcefulness (Thinking)
Being ready, willing and able to learn in different ways

• asking questions and finding out more information
• making links and connections to experiences and prior learning
• imagining and using your 'minds eye' to learn from your world
• thinking and giving reasons why
• making good use of resources (people, books, videos, charts, websites etc.)

Reflectiveness (Managing)
Being ready, willing and able to become more strategic about learning

• planning (goals, next learning steps etc.)
• monitoring and changing things as you go
• learning from your experiences (even if it isn't right)
• understand how to learn and how you learn

Reciprocity (Relating)
Being ready, willing and able to learn alone and with others

• balancing being social with good work habits 
• learn with others (groups, partners, buddies, whole class, other classes and across the school, as well as globally)
• be empathetic and listen to others' view points (understand their view point even if it is different to yours)
• pick up values and good habits from others at school, home and in the wider community

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Today the Tipuranga Pod had a guest speaker; Simon from Wastebusters.  We learnt a lot and were shocked to see the damage that waste is doing to our environment!

Here are some questions (wonderings) that Room 16 thought of after Simon's visit.  See if you find any information or answers to these!

 

• If we continue to create this amount of waste, what will New Zealand look like in one hundred years?
• What will New Zealand do once there is no more space left at the landfills? 
• What do other countries do with their waste?
• Can we make paper out of other resources? (so that we don’t have to harm our trees!)
• How much oil does New Zealand use in a day/year?
• Is there rubbish in space and what problems does it cause?
• How does waste harm animals?
• How does waste harm us?
• How does silica sand turn into glass?
• Where is silica sand found?

Online Safety Pledge

This an example of the pledge we will sign on Monday so that we we have clear guidelines for safer Internet use.  We have been TALKING and THINKING about cyber safety and now it is time to DO!  This pledge we are taking will help us to remember to be cyber-safe.

Internet Safety

We have been learning about how to be responsible digital citizens.  The value we have been focusing on is RESPECT so it was great to be able to discuss how this relates to cybersafety.

Digital Footprints

This week, we have been thinking about e-safety, staying safe on line, and our digital footprints.  We celebrated all the things we LOVE about our on-line lives by writing all the places we like to visit.  We wrote these in a footprint.  Tomorrow we will photograph some for you.  There was some amazing work!   We are also going to complete a class footprint about cybersafety on Taxedo and write an acrostic poem about what we need to think and do when we are online.

Welcome Back!!

It was so nice to see so many happy faces arrive at school yesterday! Parents, please call in to see us whenever you can. We have an open-door policy and look forward to meeting more parents on Wednesday 11th February at the 'Meet the Teacher evening.
