Values Bar Graph

In Room 16 we have been learning about all sorts of different graphs.  Today we created a values bar graph.  These are the values that we all believe are important in our class.
Wow! We are going to have a super year !!!

Learning Our Multiplication & Division Facts

Knowledge is important.  Mathematics is based on knowing.  We need to retrieve knowledge quickly when solving problems.  Therefore knowledge ENABLES and lack of it DISABLES.  Knowledge is important because using knowledge can decrease the load on the working memory and enable students to solve more complex number problems.  What multiplication & division facts the children should know...
Y4 - 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x & 10x ( multiply & divide)
Y3 - 2x,  5x & 10x ( multiply & divide)
Keep going if you know theses.

2-D Art

Thinking about the 2D shapes to use.

We used  these concepts - shape, abstraction, overlapping, use of space and focal point.

We used pastels to colour the shapes.  Where it overlapped we used a different colour.

Doesn't this completed work look great!

Can you spot the 2D shapes?

Painting on the dye.

Be careful with that dye!

AMAZING ARTWORK!

Math's Games

Playing games is an important part of our math's programme.  Why?
1.  They give the children meaningful situations to apply their knowledge and skills
2.  They motivate the children to both participate and enjoy
3.  They help children  develop a positive attitude and reduce the fear of failure/error
4.  Greater learning can occur through interaction with others and provide opportunities to test ideas and problem-solve
5.  Games allow children to operate at different levels of thinking, and to learn from each other
6.  Assessment - through playing games teachers can make observations of children's actions and decisions in a non-threatening situation
7.  Games provide hands-on interactive tasks for both home & school
8.  Children can work independently of the teacher - the rules of the game and their motivation usually keeps them on task
Davies (1995)

Take a look at this video.  It shows how engaged and focused the children in Room 16 are.

Volume in Maths

The 'Hearts' math's group task was to make a 3 D shape from 27 cubes.  They photographed their models.
