Home Fun & Extra for Experts


This will be handed out on a Tuesday and is due back the following Monday.  This is to allow time in the weekend to do any tasks that you may not have been able to complete throughout the week due to other commitments.  In your child's 'homefun book' their is a copy of expectations.  There is also this information following the 'Extra for Experts' ideas.




PLANET EARTH AND BEYOND



LITERACY 
 Create an Alien language with translation.
  Write a creation myth about how the planets can to exist.
 Write newspaper report about the first moon landing.  Write a story about one of the constellations.
 Write a persuasive text convincing people to buy property on                                                                 Mars. Prepare a brochure to go with your letter
ICT 
 Use stop motion animation to create a space themed video.
 Film a weather report for a planet (not Earth!)
HISTORY
  Write a history of space travel.
  Character study of Neil Armstrong or any famous astronaut/ cosmonaut.
  Write a report on Galileo.
 Create a computer presentation about the space race.
 Write a report on the how people’s perceptions of space have changed.
SCIENCE 
 Investigate shadow lengths throughout the day- what does this experiment show?
  Create a planet fact file.
 Keep a moon diary to show the phases of the moon.
 Investigate gravity; estimate the weights of objects on Mars and the Moon.
 Prepare a lesson to teach the class about an aspect of Space you enjoy (Be ready to teach it!)
DESIGN TECHNOLOGY 
 Make a Papier Mache solar system model.
  Make a model rocket with a parachute to aid re-entry.
 Design an Astronaut’s space suit complete with suitable fabric suggestion (they need to keep warm) and list why those materials are suitable.
 Make a space mobile.
 Make a space rover.
 Design an alien (look to the natural word for features) and create an alien mask.
  Design and make a lunar base for the moon.

    What to do
    15 minutes (at least) of reading.
    Complete the reading log at the back of our home fun book.
    Return school readers daily.

    Parent/caregivers - How you can help at home
    Make time to read with your child every night or to ask them questions about what they have read independently.
    Remember to ask lots of questions about what they are reading (comprehension has become more of a focus now your child is in the middle school)

    What to do
    Learn the spelling words that are in your spelling notebook every night.

    Parent/caregivers - How you can help at home
    Test your child on their spelling words at least two times per week
    Encourage your child to visit spelling city or to write sentences using the words that they are learning.
    LSCW - Look, Say, Cover, Write (a great way to encourage your child to spell their words)

    What to do
    Learn all the basic fact on the sheet your teacher has given you.  This should be pasted into your Home Fun book.

    Parent/caregivers - How you can help at home
    Test your child on their basic fact.
    Write extra problems using the same skills if they need extra.
    Encourage your child to use their 'skoolbo account'

    There is not set task for this however the skills learnt when reading are a key to writing successfully.  Spelling is also another vital tool to becoming a successful writer.

    Parent/caregivers - How you can help at home
    Encourage your child to write on their school blog!
    Encourage them to write shopping lists, instructions - anything at all!
