The 4 R's of Learning

Guy Claxton talks about learning power.  We are developing the children's 'Learner Toolboxes', so we will be discussing the following learning power 'muscles' (dispositions) we need to develop to make us powerful learners.   
What makes a good learner?
What qualities, knowledge , skills and dispositions do we need to be successful learners?
We are hoping that all children in Tipuranga will develop and strengthen their 'learning muscles' in our 'Mind Gym'.  We will be making sure their 'learning toolboxes' grow and develop over 2015.  Guy Claxton says...

' Being stuck is the beginning of learning, not the end!'

Resilience ( Feeling)
Being ready, willing and able to lock into learning

  • being absorbed and getting pleasure from learning
  • recognising and reducing interruptions
  • noticing all the opportunities around you
  • 'stickability' when the going gets tough (it is OK to make mistakes and remember to learn from them)


Resourcefulness (Thinking)
Being ready, willing and able to learn in different ways

  • asking questions and finding out more information
  • making links and connections to experiences and prior learning
  • imagining and using your 'minds eye' to learn from your world
  • thinking and giving reasons why
  • making good use of resources (people, books, videos, charts, websites etc.)


Reflectiveness (Managing)
Being ready, willing and able to become more strategic about learning

  • planning (goals, next learning steps etc.)
  • monitoring and changing things as you go
  • learning from your experiences (even if it isn't right)
  • understand how to learn and how you learn


Reciprocity (Relating)
Being ready, willing and able to learn alone and with others

  • balancing being social with good work habits 
  • learn with others (groups, partners, buddies, whole class, other classes and across the school, as well as globally)
  • be empathetic and listen to others' view points (understand their view point even if it is different to yours)
  • pick up values and good habits from others at school, home and in the wider community
